Under the Austrian packaging regulations, producers must finance the collection and recycling of packaging they first place on the market in Austria when this packaging becomes waste. The producer normally achieves this by joining a local packaging compliance scheme and paying a packaging recycling fee.

Due to the way in which Illumina sells packaged products in Austria, Illumina is not classed as a packaging producer in Austria for any of the packaging included with Illumina products. Illumina is therefore not legally required to join a packaging compliance scheme and pay for the collection and recycling of this packaging when it becomes waste.

Illumina customers in Austria can ensure the recovery of their packaging waste by working with a local packaging waste contractor. You may already have arrangements established with a local waste contractor to handle other types of waste. Under the Belgian packaging regulations, as an importer of packaged products into Belgium, Illumina is required to financially contribute to the take-back and recycling of waste packaging, as necessary to meet the packaging recovery and recycling targets in Belgium.

Illumina fulfils this requirement as a member of the VAL-I-PAC compliance scheme. Illumina pays packaging recycling fees to the scheme in proportion to the amount of packaging Illumina places on the Belgian market, to finance the take-back and recycling of waste packaging and meet the recovery and recycling targets.

Through its packaging regulations, rather than place obligations on packaging producers to finance the costs of collection and recycling of packaging, Denmark has opted for internalisation of packaging waste management costs rather than the construction of an industry-run funding system.

Therefore, in Denmark, responsibility for financing and establishing systems for the collection and recovery of both household and commercial packaging waste lies with municipalities. Under the French packaging regulations (specifically Decree no. 94-609 relating to non-household packaging waste), where packaging waste is held by commercial and industrial final holders, it is these final holders who must ensure that it is recovered. The packaging producer is not required to finance the collection and recycling of this waste packaging.

Illumina places packaging into circulation in France that becomes waste on commercial and industrial premises. Illumina is therefore not legally required to finance the collection and recycling of this packaging when it becomes waste. Instead, this is the responsibility of Illumina customers.

Under the German Ordinance on the Avoidance of Packaging Waste (VerpackV), Illumina is required to finance the collection and recycling of packaging Illumina supplies to the German market when it becomes waste. There are different requirements placed on Illumina, depending on whether the packaging is classed as Sales packaging, or Transport (and commercial Sales) Packaging.

Sales Packaging

For packaging that becomes waste and is disposed of in waste streams similar to households, Illumina participates in a 'Dual System', and the fees that Illumina pays to the Dual System help to fund the collection of waste packaging disposed of via waste streams similar to households. Transport and Commercial Sales Packaging

For packaging that is not disposed of in waste streams similar to households, Illumina has contracted with Interseroh to take back this packaging from Illumina customers, when requested. If you hold packaging that was used to package Illumina products supplied to you and this packaging cannot be disposed of in waste streams similar to household waste streams, you can request Illumina to collect this packaging from you for recycling. You can either contact Interseroh using the alternative contact details below, or you can contact Illumina and we will liaise with Interseroh to organise the collection.

Under the Icelandic packaging regulations, producers must finance the collection and recycling of packaging they first place on the market in Iceland when this packaging becomes waste. The producer achieves this by paying a Product Fee, which funds the Icelandic Recycling Fund.

Illumina is therefore not legally required (or able) to pay for the collection and recycling of this packaging when it becomes waste through payment to the Icelandic Recycling Fund.

Under the Dutch packaging regulations, packaging producers are required to finance the collection and recycling of packaging they supply to the Dutch market when it becomes waste. This is achieved by paying a ‘Waste Management Contribution’ to the Packaging Waste Fund, Stichting Afvalfonds Verpakking (SAV), who distribute the funds to the recycling industry accordingly. However, packaging producers are exempt from paying the Waste Management Contribution, if they place less than 50 tonnes of packaging on the Dutch market per year.

Illumina monitors the weight of packaging supplied to the Dutch market, and when Illumina places more than 50 tonnes of packaging on the Dutch market in a year, Illumina meets its responsibility to finance the collection and recycling of waste packaging by paying the Waste Management Contribution to SAV. Norway is a European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member and has to comply with the EC Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive under the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement. At the time of writing, there are no statutory producer collection and recycling obligations for packaging in Norway, but packaging producers are expected to finance the take-back and recycling of packaging waste through the implementation of Voluntary Environmental Agreements. Furthermore, statutory requirements have been proposed and will come into force.
